Hmmmmm...........

This incident happened a few months back when I had gone to my grandparent’s house during my annual trip. My cousins had also come and on that particular day, or rather night, we were all getting ready to go to bed when the talk turned to how Mallika Sherawat had (Un?)dressed for an interview. My youngest cousin, who was 9 years then, was in her petticoat (for the night) and hence had wrapped her bedsheet around her as she felt shy being that way in front of us. We told her to do away with the bedsheet and tried to tell her that it was ok if she didn’t have the bedsheet around her. My mom very wisely(?) gave the example of Mallika Sherawat saying something like “Look at her. She wears such short clothes. Why do you feel shy in your dress?” hoping to convince my cousin. Immediately my cousin responded (sincerely, according to me) “Woh to bade log hain” which translates to something like “They are adults!”, as if that was a reasonable explanation.

I know that this sounds funny :D In fact, we all laughed about it. But it makes me think too. Because, if this is the kind of message we are sending out to the kids, I can only say “God help all”!

Comments:
sad that wordly experiences slowly pollute the innocence of a child!

Blogging after more than a month and the topic you can think of his Mallika sherawat and her dressing, eh?

monu - thats what even i feel at most times (the teaching part of wordly experience is fine, it is the polluting part i have a problem with )

pk - actually, the whole point was to illustrate how children get affected/influenced by such things.
NOTE: I don't have a crush on Mallika Sherawat :D

worldly and not wordly :)

May be the media exposure is more now that they learn more things which we do not at their age..

I don't think Mallika Sherawat is going to spoil our new generation..there are other immediate factors significant than that..

ramo - Mallika was just an example to drive home the point. I agree that there are other factors.

Can't comment on your mom's presence of mind! ;)

But LOL on your cousin's "Adults" comment! she got it right!

Just to add to her comment: Adults are all adulterated! ;) (Bad PJ, but still, very apt for the situation!)

adi - Yeah, all adults are adulterated -except me :)

Hehe, the situation on earth is reversing !!!! Small people wearing big clothes, and big people wearing small clothes.. Yennaa ulagamadaaa saaaamy !!! :)

john - yeah, what you say is true in some cases. God knows what next!
Me closing my eyes!!! :D

There are two reasons for ppl to wear small clothes.
1. comfort
2. increase ones attractive index

In most western countries summer means cottons and more skin, ppl have got used to this. By "ppl" i am referring to both sexes. By "used to this" i am referring to both indulging in this act and watching ppl indulge in this act. So eventually they have learned to make it more of an issue of comfort.

India in this respect is still very conservative and so we find this as exhibition and bold. But with time this will change to become more of an issue of comfort (or better stated as “used to this” ;)). When I look at the latest lineup of movies and television programs I’d say that it will not take long. Thereafter there will be no need to wear a bedsheet :))

Agreed that it is a question of "getting used to".
But it is my opinion that people can wear clothes they are comfortable in
as long as others around aren't uncomfortable.May be others would get
comfortable if they are used to it - but i am guessing that would
take some more time in India.

And i totally agree when you say it is a question of (i) comfort
and/or (ii) increasing attractiveness.
My only request to all those people who are in category (ii) is "Please
limit your attractiveness for the sake of others!"

:D

If they were to limit their attractiveness, then they will be denying others a chance to get accustomed to this :))

Rotfl…

Good to see a post from you after a verrry long time Divya :-)

It is unfortunate that many parents actually dress their little children (especially girls) like movie starlets! And they actually think it is fashionable!

vinay - I refuse to reply to your comment as you have biased interests in your heart :D

vinesh - :) Yeah, that happens.
But i feel that it is ok as long as it isn't awkard or overdone.

I'll tell you why.I feel it is an inherent quality in the female gender( and small girls are no exception) to like to dress up.So, thats why you get to see small girls wearing red lipstick on their chin (:D), 2 mozham poo on their 1 mozham hair, glittering jigina bangles and so on.......Hope you understand what i am trying to say.
At the same time, if not kept in control, these may misguide the child later on in life. What say ?

Hey ppl...

Having read thro all your comments, i cant help but get shocked at the fact that you are all actually taking my sis seriously! Huh! ve got no more words to say!
